A jazz breeze will continue to blow in İstanbul until next month as the city prepares to host the fourth edition of the Jazz in Ramadan concert series just five days after the ongoing İstanbul International Jazz Festival wraps up its 20th edition on Thursday.
First introduced in 2010 by Hakan Erdoğan Productions to delight jazz lovers during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Jazz in Ramadan's 2013 edition will begin on July 23 with a performance by acclaimed jazz pianist-composer Kerem Görsev and his trio at the garden of the Sakıp Sabancı Museum (SSM) in İstanbul's Emirgan quarter, according reports in the Turkish media.
Famed US jazz drummer Omar Hakim and Turkish ney player Kudsi Erguner will share the same stage in a live performance, whose date has not yet been announced as part of the series, which will run until Aug. 1. Among the other musicians on the bill are Turkish saxophonist İlhan Erşahin and Norwegian jazz pianist-composer Jon Balke. All of the performances will take place at the museum's garden at 9 p.m., the Radikal daily said on Monday.
In the meantime, the İstanbul Jazz Festival has three more concerts on its bill this week. Spanish pianist Chano Dominguez, who blends flamenco and jazz in his music, will take to the stage on Wednesday night at the garden of İstanbul Archeological Museums, playing pieces from his latest album, “Flamenco Sketches.” Young Turkish jazz vocalist Ece Göksu will also perform on Wednesday night at the İstanbul Foundation for Culture and Art's İKSV Salon performance hall as part of the festival's “European Jazz Club” events. Swiss harmonica player Gregoire Maret will accompany the singer in the concert.
On Thursday Syrian-Armenian singer Lena Chamamyan will perform with pianist Tuluğ Tırpan, cellist Özer Arkun and kanun player Göksel Baktagir at the Yıldız Palace Hasbahçe. The event will take place as part of the festival's “Encounters with Masters” series, which brings together world-renowned jazz masters since 2006.
The festival will end on a high note with a concert on July 29 by Grammy-winning R&B and soul singer-songwriter John Legend. The musician, who is currently on a world tour, will perform his first-ever concert in İstanbul at the Cemil Topuzlu Open-air Theater in Harbiye.
